How to Become a Certified Nursing Assistant

Becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA) is a straightforward process and you can become certified in as little as two weeks.

The easiest way to start is to look for local CNA classes. Because this type of career is licensed at the state level, you can also contact your State Nurse Aide Registry or State Licensing Board for information on which nursing agencies offer CNA programs. When searching for programs note that there are several job titles which refer to a CNA, such as a nurse aide, patient care assistant, or home health assistant. Programs to become certified can take anywhere from two to eight weeks, with most programs taking three to six weeks.

Probably the most straightforward way to jump into the CNA career is to go to local hospitals or nursing homes and inquire about training. A lot of places will hire you as a nursing assistant and train you until you're certified, often at a reduced cost or even for free. Within a few weeks you'll be certified and have a job in the field. You might wonder why even be certified in the first place if you can get a job without certification. Being certified offers better career opportunities and at least a few dollars higher in wage.

Whichever path you choose, at the end of your training you need to pass a state-regulated exam. This exam has both a written part and a practical, clinical part. The practical portion of the exam tests your basic care-giving skills in a clinical setting and proper use of safety measures. Remember you are not only showcasing your skills, but also your bedside manner, the proper protocols when dealing with patients, and your professionalism.

To be a good CNA you need to be compassionate, patient, and a dedicated. It's hard work, but being a certified nursing assistant is a highly rewarding career, and a great stepping stone to a nursing career.
